Helena Appio is an artist and con­fec­tioner extra­or­di­naire. For my last birth­day, shared with two friends, Helena cre­ated a heav­enly con­coc­tion in three lay­ers. Each was a del­i­cate sponge cov­ered in pas­tel icing and dec­o­rated with fon­dant orchids and beau­ti­ful per­son­alised pen­nants inscribed with our names. Amazing!

I remem­ber what a beau­ti­ful sur­prise your cake was on my birth­day – the dec­o­ra­tive roses and sprigs of flow­ers and the flag with my name on and the beau­ti­ful bronzed can­dles. The tex­ture and aroma of the cake were truly spe­cial, the cake melt­ing with flavour in one’s mouth.

A pair of Helena’s cakes made a real cel­e­bra­tion of my son and daughter’s joint 21st/18th birth­day lunch.  Not only were both the lemon and choco­late really deli­cious, but the dec­o­ra­tions were beau­ti­ful and com­pletely unique, includ­ing an amaz­ing hand painted sugar por­trait of my daugh­ter.  The guests were cap­ti­vated by the intri­cate dec­o­ra­tions of rib­bons, flags and flow­ers.  Alto­gether, these fab­u­lous cakes made a gath­er­ing of fam­ily and friends a really mem­o­rable occasion.
